Using The Microsoft Movie Editor To Make Great Scene Transitions For Your Home Made Video

One of the pleasant surprises about the complete Windows PC package is that it comes with the Microsoft Movie Editor. When you purchase the windows package, you suddenly have home made video editing capacity. The software may have sat, unused on your computer, for years, but when that moving making bug bites you, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that you don’t have to lay out big bucks to begin editing videos and movies. Using a special digital detection method, the movie maker automatically slices raw video footage into small clips, wherever it detects an abrupt scene changes. The movie maker features a story line editing board, with clip holding boxes and transitional areas. When a user is ready to edit, he simply drags his video clips into one of the boxes. Special effects can then be added to one or more of the clips, and special transitions can be added to the space between the boxes.

To add transitions to your video, you first add your video clips into the boxes as described above. Then you click on the transitions menu, and a drop down menu will open up displaying the types of transitions that are available for editing.Just click on a transition and view it on the movie maker monitor. When you find a transition you like, simply drag it to the transition area on the time line.

What types of transitions are there in the movie maker’s collection? Some transitions are of the fade in fade out type. Dan Schecter of About.com has described these types as connoting the passage of time or change of scene. Other transitions consist of the new scene replacing the old scene in geometrical shapes which increase in size or number.Geometrical transitions are interesting in that they remind us that we are seeing life through the lens of a camera, though at times some people find them distracting.

Between these two transition extremes, there are many variants. With some of the fade in and fade out transitions, the two scenes briefly appear superimposed one on another. This can be effective in creating continuity. With some geometrical changes, the new shapes are so tiny and diffuse that the transitional effect is similar to a fade out. Sometimes, the geometrical shapes are made of the new scene, but sometimes, they are abstract designs, which serve to break up the old scene, before they become transparent or transform to the new scene.

Another type of transition removes the old scene in a symbolic or psychologically meaningful way. For example, in one transition the old scene peels away like a page of a book being turned. In another transition, the old scene lifts up, shrinks and recedes in the background. This might imply that the old scene is receding in memory, being filed away into the back of the mind.

The set up of the windows transition editor is made for the beginning video or movie editor and is easy and fun to use. The transitions which come with the software represent an important cross-section of the transitions that we are all used to seeing in Hollywood films.
