The Main Advantages Of FDM Technology.

First RP technology has been implemented in the late 80′s, when American company 3D Systems has launched to the market its first installation SLA (Stereo Lithography Apparatus), creating a model using layer by layer photopolymer solidification under the influence of the laser beam. Since then several companies were involved in the development of equipment for prototyping: some of them improved the previously developed method, while others offered their own original and effective technology.

Thus, the American company Stratasys, Inc. in 1988 suggested the technology FDM, and in 1992, put on the market equipment that allows producing quickly plastic prototypes. This equipment for prototyping is characterized by excellent technical characteristics: precision of manufacturing the models, performance, flexibility, choice of modeling materials, and a wide model range makes it possible to use these devices in large enterprises or small firms.

The principle of creating models-prototypes on the technology FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is a layered stacking of the molten polymer thread fused to the semi liquid state in accordance with the geometry of the mathematical model of the details developed in the CAD. A mathematical model is transferred in the STL format into a special software Insight, which automatically orients its best on the working area installation and splits into horizontal layers. Then, Insight (also automatically) determines the need for supporting elements for the overhanging parts of the model. The generated data is transferred to the installation and begins the process of creating the model layer by layer.

If it was used so-called “support” for the model construction of the prototype, after the completion of the process it can be easily separated from the model by mechanical means or washed away by special water solution in an ultrasonic bath tub. The model, made by using this technology, called Water-Works, remains smooth and clean, without scratches and scrapes, with maintaining the smallest details. WaterWorks Technology provides unlimited opportunities for modeling thin-walled parts and parts with complex internal cavities. In addition, it is possible parallel production of several parts, unless they fit into the work zone of installation.

After the end of modeling process the product can be used almost immediately, because it does not require long-term follow-up completion. This is a fundamental difference between FDM and RP-technologies of other companies, according to which the process of fine-tuning models requires significant time costs and the availability of laboratories equipped with special exhaust system and cooling. The disadvantage of RP-related equipment is also the use of some expensive and not always safe technologies (e.g., lasers, chemicals, etc.).

Equipment FDM is very convenient in use, inexpensive in service and enables to produce the models- prototypes for a few hours (depending on the size of the model). Technology FDM is environmentally friendly – for accommodation of the facilities Stratasys it is not required any special conditions, so that they can be placed in close proximity to the employment of designers and technologists. In the process of modeling there is no need for monitoring by the operator, so devices can operate at night and on weekends.

Do you face the problem when you want to present your product but there is no model? Then for sure you require rapid prototyping. In addition this technology can be of great use for marketing while the goods has not been ready yet. Interesting? Go to this cheap rapid prototyping site.

This rapid prototyping methodology is a powerful instrument nowadays. Use it to investigate products, their weak and strong points. Also keep in mind that current online technologies offer you a unique opportunity to try and to find anything you might need. Should you want to be aware of new publications on the subject.
