There used to be just one program out there that quickly, easily, and (mostly) legally copied commercial DVDs: DVD X Copy. When we reviewed it, we said (among other things) that the preferences could be challenging for novices and that the price was high. Maker 321 Studios may have heard our call, because it now offers DVD X Copy Xpress, a much cheaper option ($49.99 after a currently offered rebate, but $89.99 standard) that simply removes most of the preferences of the pricier version. Xpress is much easier to use, but it offers far less control over the finished product. (The pricier, recently announced DVD X Copy Gold combines the features of both the original and Xpress.) If you want to back up your DVD collection cheaply and easily, grab this app ASAP–after all, it might not be legal for long. Installing the PC-only DVD X Copy Xpress is quick and easy, although it does require online or phone activation before it will work. You get three activations (meaning you can run it on three separate machines) per copy, and you can call for another three if you’re having trouble. The interface is simple and clear, featuring only an Options tab and a big, round Go button.

Feature Set:

Some of the features that make DVD X Copy Xpress an excellent DVD copying product include; the ability to copy all the bonus footage and menus or just the movie, the ability to copy a DVD-9 (a DVD that holds 9 GB) to one disk, the ability to customize the compression, episodic DVD support (e.g. Simpons), and the ability to restore damaged DVDs. DVD X Copy Xpress is also one of the fastest copying and compressing applications available.

One feature that is missing that other products have is the ability to copy your DVD movies to CDs. In other words, you need a DVD burner for it to function. But using a DVD burner with DVD X Copy Xpress always delivers superior quality copies. You can save all of the menus and features of your original DVD, and the software compresses the DVD onto one single DVD disk rather than three or four disks that you would normally use with a DVD-ROM and a CD burner. The video and audio resolution in the copied DVD is as perfect as the original.

Ease of Use:

Once the software is installed on your computer, the DVD copy process is simple and self-explanatory. Just insert the original DVD so it can be decrypted and ripped onto your computer, then insert a blank medium–a blank DVD–it’s that simple. The quality of the movies we copied using DVD X Copy Platinum is as good as it gets. We didn’t notice any significant quality loss even when compressed.
