The gadget world has been having a lot of fun ever since Apple launched it’s revolutionary Apple iPad tablet PC. The iPad is much more exciting than a smartphone, and more portable than a traditional PC. It’s become the most desirable gadget of 2010.
But the Apple iPad does have some drawbacks; it does not support Flash, which means that when you surf sites that have videos or advertising, or even a Flash-enabled front page, all you see is a blue cube where the Flash images would be. Apple did this because they believed Flash took up too many system resources. But it is annoying for the user.
Then there is the lack of a built in camera, still or webcam. This means you can’t really use your iPad for video conferencing, you still need your laptop. The lack of a USB port is even more irritating for business users as they can’t easily transfer documents to and from the iPad and their PC without using a special dongle (which costs extra).
Apple’s competitors are trying to cash in on the iPad’s drawbacks by offering tablets that can do everying the iPad can plus offers the missing functions. But how successful are they?
The French company Archos issued the Archos 9, which does indeed allow you to multi-task, use a web-cam and use the built in USB port. In addition it uses the Windows 7 operating system, which means that most software runs on it . Archos pratically invented the tablet PC, so the Archos 9 comes as a bit of a disappointment. Unfortunately, having more functions than the iPad has slowed the Archos 9 down, especially the Flash. The Archos 9 is run on the Intel Atom 1.2GHZ processor, and until they upgrade to a faster processor, the Archos will feel much slower than the iPad.
Hewlett Packard are working on the HP Slate, which they hope will be in the shops in time for Christmas. Like the Archos 9, it will also run on the Windows 7 operating system, and will have camera and video-conferencing, will be able to multi-task and be able to display Flash used on websites.
But will it run better than the Archos 9? We think it will, because they will be using the Intel Atom 1.6GHZ processor, which is much more powerful than the 1.2GHZ one that the Archos uses. But we won’t know for certain that it is an iPad killer till we actually get the chance to try it out.
Until it is released for sale, the Apple iPad has the field to itself, and those who can’t wait for Christmas and the HP Slate will buying the iPad.
