Advice On Keeping Your Video Camera In Good Condition

Advances in technology have come a long way over the last few years, especially with regards to electronic equipment. Everything is becoming faster, smaller and more efficient. It is generally expected nowadays that expensive electronic equipment purchases, especially known brand name items, should last much longer than the equivalent products of 10 years ago or more. Video cameras, as an example, have evolved dramatically (size, efficiency and ability), but, more importantly for some, longevity.

With regards to video cameras, it is important, if you wish for them to last a long time, for you to take care of your equipment and keep it well maintained. There are a few guidelines that you should follow in order to do this, listed below.

Keep your equipment clean – Camera lenses and LCD screens are very delicate parts of a video camera. One small scratch on a lens can make a huge difference in the quality of the media that is captured. With this in mind it is imperative that the equipment is kept clean at all times. Dust and dirt can easily get inside equipment and severely reduce the lifetime of a camera if sufficient care is not taken. If your equipment is waterproof, you must still ensure that it is cleaned in warm water after use in salty or dirty conditions.

Avoid misuse – Always avoid using the camera near water or when it is raining unless it is either waterproof or you have a waterproof casing; if water comes into contact with the electronic systems inside a camera, you could be saying goodbye to a large sum of money in repairs, if repair is even possible. Do not subject the camera to violent knocks; dropping the camera or using it for means which it was not designed will almost certainly damage it, again, resulting is a large repair bill.

Batteries – Many people fail to consider that the batteries inside a camera need to be checked and taken care of also. Lithium ion batteries have a lifetime of around 500 cycles and will diminish in performance once that figure is exceeded. Also, if you plan on storing the equipment, always make sure the batteries are removed as they can leak and damage the camera equipment.

As stated above, it is important to ensure that you take appropriate care when using your video camera and keep it in good condition at all times; failing to do so can reduce the quality of videos and, more importantly, its lifetime, dramatically.
